How To Face The Discomfort of Change

Yesterday was really tough. I felt light headed, a little drunk, and mentally not all there. No I don’t have the flu and I haven’t taken any sort of drugs. I feel this way because I’m trying a new short term diet to loosen my dependency on sugar. I knew it would be hard, but I didn’t expect it to be this hard.

But despite the difficulty I’m still in good spirits for one reason: I know it won’t last.

No matter how off I feel, no matter how hungry I feel, and no matter how much I would love to shove a handful of M&M’s down my throat, I endure. Not because I’m super human, have amazing will power, or that I’m better than you are. I endure because I remind myself that it will not last.

Facing Change In Hard

If you are anything like me, there have been times you’ve felt afraid that if you make a change, you will feel uncomfortable. Moreover, as you considered taking action the spectre of this discomfort haunted you like a ghost.

You imagined changing would make you feel awkward and off. You imagined this feeling lasting for a long time, maybe even the rest of your life. And so you stayed where you were.

But the truth I have found again and again is that discomfort doesn’t last forever. And even when it does endure, it’s never as long or as bad as you fear.

You see while impermanence can be a bummer when it comes to summer, young love, or a tasty chocolate bar. The nature of impermanence can also give you courage. Knowing that discomfort is temporary can help you face the things in your life you’ve been avoiding.

What if I told you I could give you a pill that would make you happy for the rest of your life, but it would give you stomach cramps and diarrhea for a two weeks. Wouldn’t you take it? Wouldn’t you trade a few uncomfortable days to be happy for a long long time?

And yet, so many of us choose to stay where we are because we are afraid of the discomfort that change will bring. So I’m challenging you and myself to stop this. To stop seeking the easy path, just because it’s a little less demanding. Instead, I challenge you to stop accepting your comfortable pain and embrace your uncomfortable path. I know that if you do, you will be so much happier that you won’t even remember why you were so worried in the first place.

A happier you is waiting, all you have to do is be willing to create the space for it, to listen to your heart, and to trust yourself.
